Mother's Help
A Mother’s Help has usually had some experience in child care, but has had no formal training. Our mother’s helps should be treated as a member of the host family and be provided with their own bedroom and full board. Many of our mother’s helps are able to drive. However, it is recommended that driving lessons are arranged in order to familiarise the employee with the highway code in the UK.
Hours of work: Under the supervision of the employer a mother’s help works between 36-45 hours per week with a break for lunch, plus two evenings babysitting (reasonable notice should be given).
Duties: Duties include child care, light housework, washing and ironing. Generally the families that require a mother’s help have preschool age children and assistance is required to entertain and educate the child in a creative and positive manner. They are a welcoming extra pair of hands to a busy active family. Mother’s helps are not domestic cleaners.
Free time/holidays: One and a half days off per week and one weekend in four free. They should have 20 days paid holiday a year plus Public Holidays.
Salary and notice period: Pay, hours to be worked, time off, holidays, accommodation etc. must be arranged before employment. It is recommended that either party shall give to the other at least two week’s notice within the first year. We recommend a net salary of between £130 to £180 per week for European applicants and from £180 upwards per week for English mother tongue applicants depending on age and experience, net of tax and National Insurance contributions, plus full board and lodging.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IN RESPECT OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED CATEGORIES IT IS THE EMPLOYERS RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT A CONTRACT IS DRAWN UP AND THAT TAX AND N.I. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE PAID.
